U-12 PRELIMINARY TRIAL FOR 2009-2010
Whilst it may seem a long way off, clubs are requested to start considering players they wish to send to the preliminary trial for next season’s (2009/10) under 12 BN representative teams. This trial will be conducted at Albany Creek Cricket Club on Sunday 15 February 2009. In the event of rain the trial will be conducted at the Premier Cricket Centre, Gympie Road, Lawnton. Players nominated by clubs to attend, will be written to in the week commencing 09 February 2009, to advise them of the time they are required to attend.
Attached is an outline of the format on how the trial will be conducted. It is recommended that clubs conduct intraclub trials to determine which players they wish to nominate.
As in previous years, there will be four different trial times, most likely 9.00am, 11.00am, 1.00pm and 2.30pm. Some further information re the trial and the process that will follow, will be provided at the same time players are written to. The first half of the season as you know will conclude on 06 December 2008 and will re commence on Saturday 31 January 2009. Therefore by giving clubs plenty of notice, they can prepare lists of players accordingly by the closing date, Saturday 07 February 2009.
As per BN practice, any player selected in this season’s BN U/12 rep teams who are eligible to represent BN in U/12 rep teams in season 2009/10, are exempt from attending on February 2009. Such players will proceed to the final selection trials in October 2009, also to be conducted at Albany Creek Cricket Club.
The bulk of the players that attend the trials, will be those playing U/11 in season 2008/09. In determining the players that clubs wish to nominate, we ask that the clubs have ensured the following, in submitting their nominations.
You have considered both full and half season players.
You have considered eligible players that are playing in a higher age group(s) (most likely U/12).
You have considered players that have joined for the second half of the season, commencing 31 January 2009.
Clubs are asked to complete the attached spreadsheet outlining each players batting and bowling credentials and particularly those they believe are worthy of trialling as Wicket Keepers. Players who are to trial as WK’s are spread evenly throughout the four trial times. Therefore, we need to know as such, so those players can be allocated accordingly and be given a fair opportunity to show their WK skills.
For the trial to be conducted, it is essential that we have selectors available to conduct the assessment. To run successfully, 10 selectors are required. Those who wish to be a selector on the day, can advise the secretary accordingly.

U-12 PRELIMINARY TRIAL ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE
BATTING ASSESSMENT
Each player will face approximately 15 balls from a bowling machine released at a speed of 75-80 km, pitched on or just outside the off stump, on a good to full length.
BOWLING ASSESSMENT
Each player will bowl approximately 2-3 overs to a batsman on the centre wicket oval. (A parent will be the batsman and they will leave every second or third ball pass through to the WK).
WICKET KEEPING ASSESSMENT
Each player nominated as a wicket keeper will keep wickets to a variety of bowlers on one of the centre wicket ovals. (A parent will be the batsman and they will leave every second or third ball pass through to the WK ). The time for each player trialling as a WK will be dependant upon the number of players nominated, but should be approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
Those trialling as WK’s must wear a helmet when keeping to spin bowlers.
FIELDING ASSESSMENT
Catching
Each player will receive five high catches released from a bowling machine (approximate height of 15 metres). (Eg 10 in a group, player 1 catches, player 2 catches, player 3 catches etc to player 10 and then back to player 1 until each has had 5 catches).
Short Throwing
Each player will pick up a stationary ball in two hands and throw the ball one handed over a distance of approximately 15 metres, at a single stump. (Eg 10 in a group, player 1 fields, player 2 fields, players 3 fields etc to player 10 and then back to player 1 until each has had 5 throws).
Long Throwing
Each player will attempt to throw five balls overarm to a wicket keeper (performed by a parent) standing a distance of 40 – 45 metres away. Markers will be positioned at 10 metre intervals of 10, 20, 30 and 40 and the distance of each throw will be recorded eg 10 or greater, 20 or greater, 30 or greater, 40 or greater. In throwing to a wicket keeper, the assessment is a combination of both distance thrown and accuracy. (Eg 10 in a group, player 1 throws, player 2 throws, player 3 throws etc to player 10 and then back to player 1 until each has had 5 throws).
